Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO)
Juan Santamaría International Airport (airport code SJO) is located in 20 kilometers from downtown San Jose, Costa Rica. With over 4 million annual passengers, Juan Santamaría is the 2nd busiest airport in Central America. The airport has a Main Terminal serving international passengers while the Sansa Terminal, named for Sansa Airlines, handles domestic flights. Over 15 airlines serve the airport including non-stop routes from the US and Canada, a 3- to 7-hour flight. A bus route runs between the airport and San Jose and taxis, rental cars and shuttles are also available. The airport has a VIP Lounge for business/first class passengers, but available to anyone for a fee.
Liberia, Costa Rica Airport (LIR)
Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport is one of four international airports in Costa Rica (there are two others in San José and one in Limón). As the country’s most northern airport it allows for convenient international access to a part of Costa Rica that’s known as the “Golden Coast.” Due to this, Liberia’s airport is the second busiest in the country (behind San José) and the ninth busiest in all of Central America. The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport is located 12 Km west of the city of LIberia in Guanacaste Province and about 40 Km east from the Papagayo Peninsula and 79 Km northeast from Tamarindo, Playa Conchal and Flamingo areas. The border with Nicaragua is about 95 Km northeast. The distance between the Liberia, Costa Rica Airport and the San Jose, Costa Rica Airport is approximately 220 Km or about 137 miles (approximately 4 hours driving time).
